Things you NEVER did in the company of Phil,

1, male karateka, never wear anything under the jacket of your gi.
2, never point your finger at him.
3, never attemt to shake hands with him with your left hand.
4, never, never, never, on a course or grading when asked a question say, " I don't know " aaarrgh

That's too right! Plus, don't ever, EVER walk in front of the desk when he was conducting a grading!

One other thing you shouldn't ever do at at one of Phil's gradings was......BLOODY TURN UP!

Joking apart as the years pass by you seem to appreciate more that what you went through made you the part animal / part person being ideally made for today's society! YOI!!!

Don't ask Phil to "Hang on a minute" when you have temporarily forgotten the name of a technique during a grading. That's a mistake I'll never forget.

Never ask Phil to grade you as a Green belt, he hated Greenbelts.
He would put you through hell in the dojo, then make you buy his beer afterwards.
A true legend, and a great master, still missed after all this time

I never had the pleasure of a Phil MIlner grading but I do recall my orange belt grading under Roy Petchy, this involved punches to the stomach to check that we were breathing properly and being attacked with stinging nettles!
