My first meeting
Hi all,
Thought i would share my first encounter with Phil. It was in 1974 (i was 15 and an 8th kyu) at the town hall in Skipton. Frank Hayes (my instructor) told us that we were going on a course to learn a few kata. Well we got there in an old mini bus which rattled like a bag of old bones it took us 4 hours!!. So we were already stiff as boards before the training had even started. I remember the hall was full of students and no changing rooms, so it was change were you could find room. The warm up was a nightmare it seemed to last forever! the kata being taught was seisanshin. Phil showed a few moves on the stage so we could all see, not much explanation as was in those days but we picked it up ok. after Phil was happy with everyone being able to grasp the kata he srceamed LINE UP! well i jumped about six feet up!
I remember Steve Barrass asking Frank what was going on and Frank said just a bit of free fighting we looked around and saw at the back some people were getting changed!! I wondered why ? I was soon to find out, all the dan grades lined up in front of us there were about 10 of them and all looked very scary! then it was one at a time, each kyu grade had to fight the dan grades and the first one was of course Phil!!
Well i just stood and watched all these poor soles gettiing a right good beasting and i was next in line. AAARRRGH !! I stood in front of Phil having had maybe one or two free fighting sessions under my belt and not being a fighter and i had to have a go at this giant man who i had just seen kick the living day lights out of men twice my age. I took up a stance and just frooze, I did attempt to kick him i think! then with an almighty kiai i received an ashi barai which nearly broke my leg, it just went numb! then YAMAE ! "It always hurts first time son" was phil,s comment.
I managed to get through on one leg to complete the line up.
I found out later that the people who got changed earlier had been on previous courses!! I think i fought in the line up, Barmy Bob and a man called ashi barai king any one heard of him? i remember he seemed quite old to me.
Had the next day off school!!
